I recently receved an e-mail about pipeline certifications and decided to post my anwer here in case others had questions
Answer
Thanks for the inquiry. I assume by credentials you mean what certifications do you need. The answer falls into two categories. What training do you need to be able to perform various operating and maintenance functions and what training or certifications do you need to construct or inspect pipelines.
Operation and maintenace training is determined by each operator and is covered under the Operator Qualification sections of the OPS regulations (in the US). Just go to the PHMSA web site and take a look. In other words, the operator certifies their people have been properly training to perform the tasks they are performing. The same is true for construction tasks, the contractor certifies their people are training to do their tasks.
There are a number of certifications provided by API and others for welding, NDT, etc. You can google the particular topic, pipeline welding inspection or pipeline ndt inspection and you will get a number of sources which come back. These schools are not generally regulated, so think carefully about which you attend prior to signing up.
PKD provides classes about the industry and students receive a certificate but we do not provide certification.
